Summerville Orchestra presents:
Singing in the Holidays
Wojceich Milewski, conductor
Summerville’s favorite holiday spectacular is back! Joined by the wonderful Singers of Summerville and Summerville High School Choirs, this special concert full of holiday cheer brings to life some of the most iconic, nostalgic, and joyful sounds of the season.
Jim Stephenson’s Charleston Christmas! is a lively, jazzy celebration of the holidays in the Lowcountry featuring several of the S.O.’s own musicians. Full of rhythmic energy and festive spirit, the piece even tips its hat to The Charleston, the famous dance craze that helped define an era of American music and culture. The spotlight on our musicians continues with Tim Berens’ exciting arrangement of A Winter Miracle, a creative fusion of Antonio Vivaldi’s Winter from The Four Seasons with beloved Hanukkah melodies.
The timeless sounds of Tin Pan Alley and the legendary songwriters of the 20th century come alive in beloved classics like The Christmas Song, Barlow Bradford’s warm arrangement of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, and Roy Ringwald’s lush setting of White Christmas. And of course, no holiday celebration would be complete without the joyful orchestral sparkle of Leroy Anderson.
Voices fill the hall throughout the evening in special choral selections, including Kim André Arnesen’s beautiful Cradle Hymn, Gwyneth Walker’s exuberant Rejoice!, an energetic medley from The Polar Express, and, of course, the concert’s annual audience sing-along.
