DESCRIPTION:Masterworks I\nJon Kimura Parker plays Beethoven\n\n\nSeptember 22\, 2024 at 3pm\nCollins Center for the Arts \nLucas Richman\, Conductor\nJon Kimura Parker\, Piano\nExperience the power of the full orchestra with a musical journey through the Romantic Era. Starting our 129th season with Louise Farrenc’s concert overture\, No. 2\, a stand-alone work reflecting the Paris opera scene of her lifetime with drama and pathos. Continuing with Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 which the composer premeired in Düsseldorf in February 1851 to such acclaim that it was repeated a month later. Completing our opening concert with the great Ludwig Van Beethoven’s “Emperor” concerto\, a truly symphonic concerto which scholars agree was most likely not named by the composer\, but rather by an early publisher who called it “Emperor” after supposedly overhearing the remark that it was “an emperor among concertos”. \nProgram \n\nLouise Farrenc | Overture No. 2 in E-flat Major\nRobert Schumann | Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major\, Op. 97\, “Rhenish”\nLudwig Van Beethoven | Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major\, Op. 73\, “Emperor”

DESCRIPTION:Masterworks II\nTchaikovsky Violin Concerto with Lun Li\n\n\nNovember 17\, 2024 at 3pm\nCollins Center for the Arts \nLucas Richman\, Conductor\nLun Li\, Violin\nTake a musical adventure through France and Russia as we immerse in a soundscape of Romanticism. Opening with French composer Hector Berlioz’s overture to his comic opera Béatrice et Bénédict\, and moving to Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto\, a monument of such stature that every aspiring violinist studies it\, but to perform it take not only great skill but a level of endurance one can only ascribe to a marathon runner. Featuring rising star violinist Lun Li\, who’s appearance is made possible through a collaboration with Young Concert Artists\, Inc.\, The Symphony by César Franck is not often performed\, but is well worth a listen. Lush romanticism rolls throughout this symphonic work\, and is the only mature symphony written by this prolific composer. \nProgram \n\nHector Berlioz | Béatrice et Bénédict Overture\nPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky | Violin Concerto in D major\, Op. 35\nCésar Franck | Symphony in D minor

DESCRIPTION:Masterworks I\nA Journey Abroad\n\n\nSeptember 28\, 2025 at 3pm\nCollins Center for the Arts \n\nLucas Richman\, Conductor\nJonathan Biss\, Piano\nA note from the Maestro: Welcome to the opening Masterworks concert of our 130th Season! We are thrilled to welcome pianist Jonathan Biss back to the BSO stage to perform Johannes Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2. Complementing the Brahms on the program will be two rarely heard masterpieces\, the Donna Diana Overture by Emil von Rezniček and the Symphony in B-flat by Ernest Chausson. One reason for curating these particular works together for our season opener is their shared common key tonality (the Chausson and Brahms are both in B-flat); I also find it fascinating that all three pieces on the program were composed within less than 15 years of each other and in close geographical proximity (Rezniček\, Austria – 1894\, Chausson\, France – 1890\, Brahms\, Germany – 1881) but each is wildly different in its compositional approach: the Rezniček elicits Italian opera\, the Chausson embraces Wagnerian harmonies\, and the Brahms seems very connected to the Austria of Schubert. That divergence of intent is\, perhaps\, these works’ uniting feature: each shares a sense of itchy feet\, wanting to reach outside of their home and take us on a journey abroad. \nProgram \nEmil Nikolaus von Rezniček  |  Donna Diana: Overture\nErnest Chausson  |  Symphony in B-flat\, Op. 20\nJohannes Brahms  |  Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major\, Op. 83\nJonathan Biss\, piano

DESCRIPTION:Masterworks II\nSymphonic Glory\n\n\nNovember 16\, 2025 at 3pm\nCollins Center for the Arts \nLucas Richman\, Conductor\nKelly Hall-Tompkins\, Violin\nA note from the Maestro: Our second concert in the 130th Season Masterworks series focuses on orchestral Americana with compositional styles that are as wide-reaching as the American frontier. Dvořák is well known for the style in which he culls musical material from traditional folk sources\, and the Symphony No. 8 is laden with tunes he heard while composing in America. The new violin concerto by Wynton Marsalis blends jazz\, blues and other classic folk styles into a canvas of American life and dreams and\, in the music of William Grant Still\, we hear a composer influenced by melodies and motives from the black American community as he skillfully weaves this material into traditional symphonic forms. \nProgram \nWilliam Grant Still  |  Festive Overture\nWynton Marsalis  |  Violin Concerto in D major\nKelly Hall-Tompkins\, violin\nAntonín Dvořák  |  Symphony No. 8 in G major\, Op. 88

We end the afternoon with the magnificent storytelling drama evoked by Beethoven’s pen\, delighting in the musical storyline of his Symphony No.6\, also known as the “Pastorale.” \nProgram \nEllis Ludwig-Leone  |  World Premiere\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart  |  Flute Concerto No. 1 in G major\, K.313\nAnthony Trionfo\, flute\nLudwig van Beethoven  |  Symphony No. 6 in F major\, Op. 68\,  “Pastorale” \nAbout the Guest Artist: \n“…a breezily virtuosic flutist\, gave an articulate and ebullient account of Ibert’s impish Flute Concerto” \n– Anthony Tommasini\, THE NEW YORK TIMES

DESCRIPTION:Masterworks IV\nThe Rite of Spring\n\n\nLucas Richman\, conductor\n\nMarch 22\, 2026 at 3pm\nCollins Center for the Arts \n\nA note from the Maestro: As winter comes to a close in Maine we may see crocuses peeking up through lightly fallen snow\, or delicate starflowers growing in our forests\, heralding the warming spring weather ahead. With the awakening and blooming of Mother Nature\, composers through the ages have embraced spring as a source of inspiration. The ballet\, The Rite of Spring\, by Stravinsky engages one of the largest orchestras we have ever put on the stage of the Collins Center and this epic work will have us rolling and romping through the rhythmic splendor of springtime. Callirhoë by Chaminade is inspired by Venus\, goddess of fertility\, and the Spring Afternoon by Boulanger is a sweet short journey into the impressionist style. The robust merrymaking of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture kicks off this programmatic celebration of Spring. \nProgram \nNikolai Rimsky-Korsakov  |  Russian Easter Overture\nLili Boulanger  |  D’un Matin de Printemps\nCécile Chaminade  |  Callirhoë\, Suite d’Orchestre\nIgor Stravinsky  |  Le Sacre du Printemps

Valerie Colman’s Umoja (Anthem of Unity) is now a staple in concert halls across the nation\, and the New England Triptych by William Schuman takes us on a musical journey to a New England of the not-so-distant past. Our season finale concert culminates in a suite of much-beloved music from George Gershwin’s opera\, “Porgy and Bess.” \nProgram \nJoan Tower  |  Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman\nAaron Copland  |  Fanfare for the Common Man\nValerie Coleman  |  Umoja (Anthem of Unity)\nWilliam Schuman  |  New England Triptych\nGeorge Gershwin  |  Porgy and Bess: A Concert of Songs\narr.
