No. 4\n Dvořák’s Carnival Overture was part of his “Nature\, Life\, and Love” trilogy of overtures\, forming the second part\, “Life”\nThe Polovtsian Dances come from Borodin’s opera Prince Igor\, adopted from an ancient Russian epic\, and are often performed separately as an orchestral showcase\n\nThe Program\n\nAntonín Dvořák  | Carnival Overture\nLudwig van Beethoven|Piano Concerto No. 4\, G major\, Op. 58\, Roberto Plano\, piano\nAlexander Borodin| Polovtsian Dances\n\nTickets\n\nSeason subscriptions on sale now; new subscribers save 40%\nSingle tickets on sale now\, starting at just $15\n\nDigital Access: April 12 to April 26\, 2022 \n\nIn-person ticketholders receive complimentary digital access\nDigital-only viewing is available for $40 per household at watch.bangorsymphony.org\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy Tickets\n\n\n I saw a kind of quiet exuberance from Plano\, with sparkling clarity and gobs of technique at its service. He plays the piano with a truly genuine approach…

Starting our 129th season with Louise Farrenc’s concert overture\, No. 2\, a stand-alone work reflecting the Paris opera scene of her lifetime with drama and pathos. Continuing with Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 which the composer premeired in Düsseldorf in February 1851 to such acclaim that it was repeated a month later. Completing our opening concert with the great Ludwig Van Beethoven’s “Emperor” concerto\, a truly symphonic concerto which scholars agree was most likely not named by the composer\, but rather by an early publisher who called it “Emperor” after supposedly overhearing the remark that it was “an emperor among concertos”. \nProgram \n\nLouise Farrenc | Overture No. 2 in E-flat Major\nRobert Schumann | Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major\, Op. 97\, “Rhenish”\nLudwig Van Beethoven | Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major\, Op. 73\, “Emperor”

DESCRIPTION:Masterworks II\nTchaikovsky Violin Concerto with Lun Li\n\n\nNovember 17\, 2024 at 3pm\nCollins Center for the Arts \nLucas Richman\, Conductor\nLun Li\, Violin\nTake a musical adventure through France and Russia as we immerse in a soundscape of Romanticism. Opening with French composer Hector Berlioz’s overture to his comic opera Béatrice et Bénédict\, and moving to Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto\, a monument of such stature that every aspiring violinist studies it\, but to perform it take not only great skill but a level of endurance one can only ascribe to a marathon runner. Featuring rising star violinist Lun Li\, who’s appearance is made possible through a collaboration with Young Concert Artists\, Inc.\, The Symphony by César Franck is not often performed\, but is well worth a listen. Lush romanticism rolls throughout this symphonic work\, and is the only mature symphony written by this prolific composer. \nProgram \n\nHector Berlioz | Béatrice et Bénédict Overture\nPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky | Violin Concerto in D major\, Op. 35\nCésar Franck | Symphony in D minor

DESCRIPTION:Masterworks I\nA Journey Abroad\n\n\nSeptember 28\, 2025 at 3pm\nCollins Center for the Arts \n\nLucas Richman\, Conductor\nJonathan Biss\, Piano\nA note from the Maestro: Welcome to the opening Masterworks concert of our 130th Season! We are thrilled to welcome pianist Jonathan Biss back to the BSO stage to perform Johannes Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2. Complementing the Brahms on the program will be two rarely heard masterpieces\, the Donna Diana Overture by Emil von Rezniček and the Symphony in B-flat by Ernest Chausson. One reason for curating these particular works together for our season opener is their shared common key tonality (the Chausson and Brahms are both in B-flat); I also find it fascinating that all three pieces on the program were composed within less than 15 years of each other and in close geographical proximity (Rezniček\, Austria – 1894\, Chausson\, France – 1890\, Brahms\, Germany – 1881) but each is wildly different in its compositional approach: the Rezniček elicits Italian opera\, the Chausson embraces Wagnerian harmonies\, and the Brahms seems very connected to the Austria of Schubert. That divergence of intent is\, perhaps\, these works’ uniting feature: each shares a sense of itchy feet\, wanting to reach outside of their home and take us on a journey abroad. \nProgram \nEmil Nikolaus von Rezniček  |  Donna Diana: Overture\nErnest Chausson  |  Symphony in B-flat\, Op. 20\nJohannes Brahms  |  Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major\, Op. 83\nJonathan Biss\, piano
