SUMMARY:Bangor Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Masterworks II\nTchaikovsky Violin Concerto with Lun Li\n\n\nNovember 17\, 2024 at 3pm\nCollins Center for the Arts \nLucas Richman\, Conductor\nLun Li\, Violin\nTake a musical adventure through France and Russia as we immerse in a soundscape of Romanticism. Opening with French composer Hector Berlioz’s overture to his comic opera Béatrice et Bénédict\, and moving to Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto\, a monument of such stature that every aspiring violinist studies it\, but to perform it take not only great skill but a level of endurance one can only ascribe to a marathon runner. Featuring rising star violinist Lun Li\, who’s appearance is made possible through a collaboration with Young Concert Artists\, Inc.\, The Symphony by César Franck is not often performed\, but is well worth a listen. Lush romanticism rolls throughout this symphonic work\, and is the only mature symphony written by this prolific composer. \nProgram \n\nHector Berlioz | Béatrice et Bénédict Overture\nPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky | Violin Concerto in D major\, Op. 35\nCésar Franck | Symphony in D minor

DESCRIPTION:Masterworks I\nJon Kimura Parker plays Beethoven\n\n\nSeptember 22\, 2024 at 3pm\nCollins Center for the Arts \nLucas Richman\, Conductor\nJon Kimura Parker\, Piano\nExperience the power of the full orchestra with a musical journey through the Romantic Era. Starting our 129th season with Louise Farrenc’s concert overture\, No. 2\, a stand-alone work reflecting the Paris opera scene of her lifetime with drama and pathos. Continuing with Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 which the composer premeired in Düsseldorf in February 1851 to such acclaim that it was repeated a month later. Completing our opening concert with the great Ludwig Van Beethoven’s “Emperor” concerto\, a truly symphonic concerto which scholars agree was most likely not named by the composer\, but rather by an early publisher who called it “Emperor” after supposedly overhearing the remark that it was “an emperor among concertos”. \nProgram \n\nLouise Farrenc | Overture No. 2 in E-flat Major\nRobert Schumann | Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major\, Op. 97\, “Rhenish”\nLudwig Van Beethoven | Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major\, Op. 73\, “Emperor”

SUMMARY:Bangor Symphony Orchestra - The Warming Sea
DESCRIPTION:Special Event\nThe Warming Sea\n\n\nMarch 19\, 2022 at 7pm\nCollins Center for the Arts \n\nLucas Richman\, conductor\nThe Maine Science Festival is returning in March 2022 and the headlining event is the world premiere of Lucas Richman’s The Warming Sea\, performed by the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. \nThe evening will combine art and science\, beginning with an overview of climate change in Maine from some of Maine’s leading climate researchers followed by a short film of interviews that Lucas Richman had with scientists\, researchers\, and practitioners in the Gulf of Maine. The interviews that you will see provided the foundation for Richman’s The Warming Sea. Then we’ll present The Warming Sea\, performed by the Bangor Symphony Orchestra with visuals created by Chuck Carter. We’ll end with the opportunity to hear from Richman and many of the scientists he interviewed about their unique collaboration.
