Long Beach Symphony Orchestra (COND)

April 30, 2016 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Lucas Richman, conductor
Marcia Dickstein, harp

Symphony No. 32

Harp Concerto

Symphony No. 3, “Eroica”

If you love traditional classical music, this concert is for you! It opens with Mozart’s Symphony No. 32, a relatively short symphony in 3 movements, then presents one of Handel’s greatest masterpieces, his Harp Concerto, featuring the Symphony’s own harpist, Marcia Dickstein. Unlike the normal balance between orchestra and soloist in most concerti, the orchestra is especially subordinate to the soloist in this one. The evening’s program concludes with Beethoven’s legendary Symphony No. 3, “Eroica”, a structurally rigorous composition of great emotional depth, which marked the beginning of the composer’s creative middle period. It consists of four movements with the characteristically Germanic Beethoven sound, and is especially known for the gravitas of the Funeral March of the 2nd movement.
